John Carter is a science fiction adventure film that follows the story of a former Confederate soldier named John Carter, who is mysteriously transported from Earth to the planet Barsoom, known to us as Mars. On Earth, John is weary from war and searching for gold, but everything changes when he stumbles upon a mysterious cave and is suddenly pulled into another world. On Barsoom, he finds himself in a place torn by conflict between various Martian civilizations.

Because of the planet’s lower gravity, John discovers he has enhanced strength and the ability to jump great distances, making him a powerful figure on Barsoom. He is captured by a tribe of tall, green-skinned warriors called the Tharks, who are amazed by his abilities. While trying to survive in this strange world, John meets Dejah Thoris, the princess of the city of Helium, who is trying to save her people from an arranged marriage and the threat of war.
As John becomes more involved in the struggles of Barsoom, he learns about the evil plans of the Zodangans, led by Sab Than, who seeks power through a mysterious energy controlled by god-like beings known as the Therns. These beings manipulate events from the shadows and want to maintain control over the planet by fueling war and destruction. Dejah tries to convince John to help her people, but he is reluctant to take sides, still haunted by the losses he faced on Earth.

Eventually, John realizes that he cannot run from his past forever. He falls in love with Dejah and decides to fight for something greater than himself. With the help of the Tharks, whom he eventually earns the respect of, John unites the different Martian factions to stop the Zodangan threat and defeat the Therns’ influence over Barsoom. In a series of epic battles, John uses his Earth-born powers and tactical skills to bring peace to the planet.
Just when he decides to stay on Barsoom and marry Dejah, he is suddenly pulled back to Earth against his will. Determined to return to the woman he loves, John spends years trying to find his way back. He fakes his own death and entrusts his story to his nephew, Edgar Rice Burroughs, hoping someone will help unlock the secret to returning to Mars.
John Carter is a tale of redemption, identity, and finding purpose in a world far from home. With action, romance, and imaginative world-building, the film explores what it means to be a hero—on any planet.
